Water Softeners

Water SoftenerWhich Ones are Prohibited?
Water softeners that discharge salt or brine to the sewer during a ‘self-regenerating’ cycle are prohibited. The Regional Sewage Treatment Plants are not designed to remove salts and the pass-through of these pollutants ultimately impacts the Santa Ana River and groundwater quality. Water softener systems with a salt tank reservoir and sewer drain are prohibited.

Which Ones are Acceptable?
Water softeners that are serviced by a vendor that exchanges spent bottles for fresh ones are acceptable. The spent bottles are regenerated at a centralized location in an environmentally friendly manner and are then reused.

The Inland Empire Utilities Agency (IEUA) provides rebates for the removal of salt self-regenerating water softeners for commercial and residential users.
