The Frontier Project Foundation completed construction on a 14,000-square-foot demonstration building that showcases how sustainable design is economical, efficient, and inviting. Located in Rancho Cucamonga, California, the Frontier Project displays and utilizes sustainable innovations for Southern California living and working environments. The Frontier Project’s goal is to educate resident consumers, commercial builders, and sustainable advocates regarding the latest methods and technologies in water, energy, and site conservation.

Is it possible to change behavior toward resource management? We believe it is. Twenty years ago, recycling as an everyday practice was just a thought. Today we have recycling bins at home and at work, and recycling has become a way of life. We believe the Frontier Project can help make a behavioral change in all areas of resource management.

Is it possible to change perceptions about sustainable building design? We believe it is. The Frontier Project Foundation has assumed the task of providing a resource in the Inland Empire to showcase sustainable building design for living and working environments. Increasing awareness to commercial and residential builders and consumers is the first step in changing perception about current building practices.

Can a demonstration building authenticate sustainable living and working environments as inviting, unique, and economically feasible? We believe it can. The Frontier Project has a Technology Gallery to display technologies and products that are not part of the building’s construction.

The Frontier Project features a demonstration kitchen, living room/ casual meeting space, photovoltaic solar array, a passive cooling system, reclaimed redwood from a local winery, an onsite water retentionsystem, and California Native plants and succulents.  Homeowners, builders, and business owners are invited to view these systems to learn how to incorporate them into their homes or businesses. Information is available on each building component, including how they work and their environmental impact.

The Frontier Project is seeking a LEED Platinum Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, and anticipates receiving this later this year.
